Physical properties*:
Yellow dock has been used for centuries and has now been scientifically verified in its use as an alterative (blood purifier and tonifier), depurative (detoxifying agent), laxative, and expectorant. It is interesting to note its dual nature, that it can purify, cleans and detoxify the blood, as well as tonify and build it up – being a rich source of iron, copper, niacin, thiamine, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, magnesium, riboflavin, potassium, phosphorous and manganese (yellow dock is indicated for anemia). Its dual nature is further exemplified in its ability to cure diarrhoea with its tannins, or promote a gentle evacuation of the bowls with its anthraquinones. It poses a strong ability to detoxify the liver, and wherever a herb can detoxify the liver it can also clear skin conditions; acne, age spots, psoriasis, eczema and rashes can all be cleared by this plant. Yet another instance where yellow dock’s dualistic nature can be experienced in the body, is in the reduction of heart burn or acid reflux typically caused by excess ‘digestive fire’, yet it can also increase the liver’s secretion of bile to clear stagnant digestion. Other conditions yellow dock can be used for include: rheumatism, arthritis, PMS pains, menopause, thick mucous/catarrh, piles, haemorrhoids, diabetes, parasite and bacterial infections.
Emotional/Spiritual Properties:
A dynamic equilibrium is reached. Yellow dock grants us the ability to digest, assimilate and then let go of our life’s experiences in an efficient way. Yellow dock is indicated where strong emotional forms such as grudges, grievances, and long simmering frustrations are held in the subconscious mind, surfacing in the form of anger, short fused tantrums and other volatile outbursts. It is sometimes quite surprising to witness how deeply buried some intense emotions can be, yet in reality they are never deeply buried because these unresolved disturbances forever shorten our fuse, skew our discernment, and in general create a baseline state of being that is innately agitated. Sometimes these unresolved disturbances to our peace need to be brought to the surface and inspected, other times they simply need to be let go of. Yellow dock has a slight laxative effect in some people, and the instances where unresolved disturbances need to simply be let go of may manifest in laxative effect taking hold. When one inspects the leaves of yellow dock during autumnal times, one can see red/rusty spots seemingly coming to the surface of the leaf, this signature indicates its useful in instances where people are experiencing hot skin conditions such as rashes or acne, and/or emotional outbursts that are coming to the surface without their control.
Contraindications/cautions:
-Should not be mixed with burdock.
-Digoxin: Yellow dock is a type of laxative called a stimulant laxative. Stimulant laxatives can decrease potassium levels in the body. Low potassium levels can increase the risk of side effects from digoxin.-Diuretics/Water pills: Yellow dock may excessively lower potassium levels in combination with water pills/diuretics.
-Warfarin/coumadin: Yellow dock may interact with warfarin to produce laxative effects.
