Physical Properties*:
Saw Palmetto is a tried and tested herb that caters to a wide range of physical ailments such as coughs, bronchitis, urinary infections, wasting, malabsorption, weakness and more. It is most prominently known as remedy for prostate issues – rather remarkably it is 96% efficacious at treating prostate issues, including benign prostatic hyperplasia, frequent urination, impotence and debility, reduced or absent sex drive, prostate inflammation and bladder weakness and/or irritation. Saw Palmetto can serve as a hair loss remedy, as it can keep testosterone levels balanced as one’s age progresses – the berries contain enzymes that  inhibit 5-alpha reductase the presence of which can turn testosterone into DHT.  Saw Palmetto may also be beneficial for a woman’s sex drive and may enlarge breast size. In old books it is written that Saw Palmetto makes things ‘juicy and plump again’, being one of the few western herbs that possesses anabolic qualities (strengthening and building body tissue and encouraging weight gain). It contains a high amount of oils that have an affinity for the nervous system, sometimes producing a sedative of calming effect. It may be best taken with food and can help the body to absorb nutrients more effectively.

Emotional/spiritual properties:
This herb draws us into a deeply feeling inspection of our desires, it asks and enables us to feel the range of them, which ones are skin deep and less consequential? Which ones are draw us closer to the fulfillment of our mission here on Earth when acted upon? Which ones of the former distract us from the latter? Desires can arise from all over the body, the mind has desires, the heart has desires, the stomach has desires, the genitals have desires etc etc… Serenoa has an affinity for the reproductive organs, and the prostate, as well as for the lungs, muscle and nerves. With that said, it is particularly useful for those who are allowing sexual desires, fetishes, fantasies and the allure of taboo things to drain their ability to walk the journey of life in a deeply noble manner, with the chasing of these desires potentially sapping strength and substance from the body. Somewhat conversely Saw Palmetto is an excellent herb for those who tend towards pious diligence in a way that denies the power and potency of desires that arise from the sacral/reproductive regions… not all of these desires are sexual, in fact many of them are not, many of them are to do with the enjoyment of all the sensual things life has to offer. These berries ask us to look at the way to their growing… all the while sinking us deeper into the possibility of our enjoyment of life’s fruits actually contributing to their flourishing! This herb may thus be apt also for those who are weakened or denied their full strength by denying the nourishment that engaging with sensual desires brings. In short, Serenoa repens is a potent herb for the evolution and maturing of one’s desires.

Contraindications:
-Pregnancy: Saw Palmetto is not recommended for pregnant women. Exercise caution when breastfeeding.
-Blood thinners: Saw Palmetto may potentiate the effect of blood thinners.
-
Serenoa repens may also decrease estrogen levels in the body, so taking saw palmetto along with estrogen pills might decrease the effectiveness of the estrogen pills and affect your hormonal balance.
