Physical Properties*:
Queen Anne’s Lace is most widely known for its abortifacient properties, like many pharmaceutical contraceptives it can thin the uterine lining and thus prevent the implant of the embryo – it can be used as both a preventative and an abortifacient in this way. It can help to relax nerves and smooth muscles in the pelvic region, which, in combination with its uterine thinning property, and its bitter, downward bearing action, make it a useful herb for inducing menses. It is powerfully cleansing herb that stimulates bile production, liver and kidney cleansing, and urine flow in the genitourinary tract - it can thus be used to treat urinary and kidney stones being able to diminish stones that have already formed, and prevent future ones from forming. Queen Anne’s Lace will act on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands altering the expression of sex hormones, it can significantly lower estradiol, Luteinising hormone, and Follicle stimulating hormone. It can increase prolactin, and the same study showed the plant to have a neutral effect on progesterone – these hormone altering effects are reversible, when one stops taking the plant. Furthermore, animal studies have shown the litters of offspring produced by mothers that were being given an extract of D.carota, to be healthy/without any defects. Though Queen Anne’s Lace can reduce hormones associated with the menstrual cycle, it does contain high amounts of porphyrins which stimulate the pituitary gland to produce sex hormones, with one study of a broad spectrum of women showing that this herb increased overall desire, ease of arousal, occurrence of orgasm, and satisfaction.

Queen Anne’s lace enables us to be present with our sexual desires, she moves through us in a way that illuminates and clarifies them.
