Physical Properties*:
This herb is known as a supreme poultice herb meaning that it is a powerful remedy when applied topically, traditionally being used to close wounds; soothe burns, sunburn, rashes and insect stings; and ease infections. Like the famous lung restorer Marshmallow, Plantain contains mucilaginous compounds that are known to sooth the respiratory system, sinuses, throat, and lungs. The German Commission E (the German equivalent of the FDA) has approved this herb for mitigating coughs and other infections of the upper respiratory system. Bulgarian studies have shown that it can be an effective treatment for chronic bronchitis. This prolific herb that grows with distinctly spined leaves contains many vitamins that hold typical antioxidant properties being notably strengthening for the eyes, and it is also quite useful in maintaining bone structure and density due to high amounts of calcium –thus being a remedy for osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. It helps to stimulate and detoxify the liver, and the mucilaginous properties can help to strengthen the gut lining and soothe the intestines. Other health concerns that plantain can take care of include: IBS, gastric ulcers, diarrhea, peptic ulcers, asthma, hayfever, lowered vitality in men (due to low zinc), and excessive urination/incontinence.

Emotional/Spiritual Properties:
There are ways in which this plant seems to be a shield bearer and fortifying feelings are definitely a trait of Saturn ruled plants. Contraindications:
-Medications metabolized in the liver: Plantains liver detoxifying properties may flush medications from the liver before they have a chance to be metabolized and thus may decrease their effectiveness.
- -Lithium: If taking lithium supplements, or drugs containing lithium, consult with your health care professional to change your dose as Plantain can reduce the rate at which your body passes lithium, thus causing a lithium build up.
