Physical properties*:
This herb is one of the best alteratives (blood purifiers). It is both bitter and warming – a rare combination of energetics- that make it perfect for alleviating inflammation via increased blood movement, whilst also reducing pain with iscoriaodine, corydaline and DL-tetrahydropalmatine which calm the nervous system and block pain signaling. Corydaline has also been shown to be antiallergenic, antiparasitic, and reduce gastric spasm, whilst also promoting the relaxation of the intestines for easier passing of stool. Corydalis is remedial for nerve disorders (e.g. parkinsons), nerve paralysis, trembling, gastric ulcers, thick/stuck mucous (catarrh), disturbed menses, period pain, scrofula (glandular swelling), and skin conditions. Corydalis is said to be “the next best pain reliever, after opium,” being applicable for pain conditions anywhere in the body – note that it belongs to the papaveracea family. Corydalis can be slightly hypnotic in higher doses, which may make it perfect for those who struggle to sleep due to pain. Note that it is rarely used individually, and should thus be combined with herbs according to one’s temperature and constitution.
Emotional/Spiritual Properties:
Ah isn’t this nice. Much of the time this human existence can grate on the nerves, it can be full of pain, both emotional and physical, so much so that many people end up experiencing chronic pain. In this scenario we can often lose sight of just where our pain began and why it it continues to remain with us – so overwhelming the persistency and amount of pain can be. Corydalis takes a hold of that pain, and tones it all down, it reduces our pains back to their original sources to help us witness where in fact our pain comes from and why it is still with us. Pain is a messenger, a messenger we often like to suppress in our modern world via the use of pharmaceutical medications, though when we chronically suppress acute symptoms we will inevitably create chronic disease. Corydalis firmly encourages us to stop silencing the messenger, and it strengthens us to actually feel the pains we have been suppressing. This is a great herb for those who consistently struggle to feel comfortable, this lack of comfort can be caused by nervous system dysregulation which corydalis can begin to address, though it can also be caused and perpetuated by a restless and flighty mind, or a mind that is just in overdrive. Corydalis grabs a hold of us, and then ensures we grab a hold of ourselves to actually come into the present moment and managing our feeling and our feelings. We begin to see all the ways in which we create discomfort for ourselves, after which we can choose to live, think and feel in ways that cause less needless strain and pain. Thus the with greater frequency we say in a more wholehearted way “isn’t this nice”…
