Physical properties*:
Coleus leaves contain rosmarinic acid and thymol which make them beneficial in cases of respiratory infection, cough and cold. Coleus will help to reduce mucous, catarrh and ‘kapha’ in the body, having a dissolving and draining action. The leaves also containe pinenes, eugenols, and cineol, all of which make them antibacterial – further adding to its usefulness in respiratory infections. It also contains high amounts (as much as 72%) of carvacrol, the principle antibacterial/antibiotic compound found in oregano oil. The leaves have high antioxidant and free radical scavenging potential. The leaves also contain quercetin, apigenin and luteolin which have histamine regulating, depression relieving, alzheimers mitigating, apoptosis inducing and diabetes regulating properties. Other properties of the leaves include: Wound healing; urinary tracting infection healing; cell protection (anticlastogenic); mast cell stabilisation; and, appetite increasing. It may reduce leptin levels.

Emotional/Spiritual Properties*:
There is a lightening, a gladdening of the heart. Coleus is a ‘cloud medicine’ just like lemon balm…a medicine that lifts the spirits. Two actions are occouring here, on the one hand sour, serious emotions like resentment are being dredged from places like the liver through the herbs bitter principles, then on the other hand the soft, heart shaped leaves and spiraling purple florets are strengthening the heart and calling our awareness skywards. Sometimes we can have a hard time choosing or shifting our emotions even though we know we should be thinking or feeling different, finding gratitude for example, though with the help of coleus it seems the obstructions to brighter emotions fall away, or perhaps it is that we simply begin to float above them a little bit, like a fluffy cloud. Its heart opening properties help us to ‘come to the party’, thinking of the faces of the friends we would like to call in, or jive with, our heart begins to smile. Coleus can also help to ease grief where we have been socially wronged, allowing us the time to mourn a little the friendships and relationships that could have been.
Contraindications/cautions:
-Bitter principles mean that use during pregnancy is not recommended.
