Physical properties*:
Chaste berry has been in use for thousands of years, with the earliest recorded use being attributed to Hippocrates in the 4th Century B.C. There are many sources of medical knowledge that would attribute chaste berry to being ‘hormonally normalizing’, meaning that any woman (or man) can take chaste berry to regulate any kind of hormonal imbalance… this is not the case! One should not take chaste berry if they are progesterone excessive because Chaste berry has the capacity to increase progesterone by increasing Luteinizing hormone and decrease estrogen by decreasing Follicle stimulating hormone secretions. If you are experiencing menstrual cycle issues, it is critical to determine which hormones are in excess and which are deficient before proceeding to treat with any herb, but especially chaste berry. Chaste berry has also been shown to reduce prolactin levels, which signals to the corpus luteum to increase progesterone levels. These hormonal effects enable chase berry to address complaints such as PMS, dysmenorrhea, mastodynia (painful breast swelling), and menopause. Progesterone is critical for conception and sustaining pregnancy, being a driver of uterine lining thickening and a mitigator of luteal phase defects – chaste berry is not recommended for latter stages of pregnancy and one should desist use if experiencing infertility issues, it may also inhibit milk production for some women and increase if for others. The berry holds a certain pungency and spice not dissimilar to black pepper, so it can be used for digestive complaints such as flatulence, bloating, and sluggish digestion. The berries can be sedative, address eye complaints, treat impotence, testicular swelling, ovarian swelling, and prostitis. Chaste can reduce the sex drive of those who are experiencing excessive libido, and it can increase it for those whose libido is low.
Emotional/Spiritual Effects:
The pelvis is the seat of creativity within the body, though perhaps it is more of a bowl were creative ideas seed and germinate. Vitex with its warm and pungent nature can bring invigoration and a sharpening clarification to this bowl of creativity. The herb engenders many of its hormone regulating actions through an interaction with the anterior pituitary gland and the hypothalamus – located in the brain- thus, we see Chaste Tree’s ability to link the sacral area with the higher mind. The cosmos is procreative by its very nature and there are some people who may be consciously or subconsciously constraining their procreative and co-creative impulses, chaste tree will give such people a necessary push out the door to go create and share one’s fruits with others, either through intimacy itself or artistic creations and projects. On the other side of the coin, there are some people whose sexual impulses have an overbearing quality, side tracking them from the higher purposes of their own life, and skewing what could be creatively fruitful relationships into flights of lust and more primal desires; whilst chaste berry will rarely seek to outright suppress sexual desires, it will downregulate them for people that are experiencing them excessively (so they can expand their primal desires to fuel creative projects and the greater living of life). One may take chaste berry if they feel the creative spark has gone from their life, or if one is having creative inspirations that they are frequently letting stagnate or fall by the wayside.
