Physical Properties*:
The wound healer par excellence! During the civil war of America calendula was prolifically used to heal battle wounds, where certain physicians stated that “no suppuration [formation of pus] seems able to live in its presence.” Whilst calendula can be applied to rashes, chaffing and sunburn with good effect, where the herb really shines is in instances of damp wounds, and wounds where the flesh is mangled or mashed, this is to say it is an excellent healer of cat scratches, dog bites, infected cuts fingers or limbs crushed in machinery, holes and scrapes caused by collisions or falls. Calendula has only a mild antibacterial property, so it is good to use in conjunction with other antibacterial herbs if the wound is infected, in such a pairing calendula will contain any bacteria and keep other bacteria out – meanwhile the antibacterial herb is killing the now contained bacteria. The herb extends its virtues to places where the sun doesn’t shine, being successfully used to cure thrush and vaginal discharge. Other dark places where Calendula brings light, warmth and movement are the lymphatic regions of the underarms, the inguinal crease (groin), under the chin, the creases of the elbows and knees and more. Calendula is a gentle but persistent lymphatic that will ease lymphatic swelling over time, as well as helping to slowly ease and expel toxic accumulations from the body.

Emotional/Spiritual Properties*:
One can feel the dark clouds lift upon consuming this solar herb, it is like an orange sunrise, where you can feel each bright ray strike through the darkness of night, each ray like one of the many pointed petals of a calendula flower. ‘It is time’ calendula says with a smile upon her face, time not for anything in particular, but time to walk with a head held a little higher, with spirits a little more cheery. There is something about this flower, that bestows a refreshment of innocence, a rekindling of optimism. Were things really that bad? Calendula asks us. Indeed, we may still be experiencing those unresolved points of gloom and burden…and if we are this herb reveals within us the knowing that we will rise above this dark patch eventually, and therefore the dark patch becomes less heavy in the now. It can be an invaluable plant ally for those who ‘choose’ or are in a phase of choosing to have a pessimistic outlook on life, calendula will lift the scales from these people’s eyes and melancholy or grumpiness from their hearts and mind helping them see with joy all the goodness that is woven around and through the more dismal or sorrowful points of life. Calendula also helps us to get our shine on!
