Physical Properties*:
Known as the Sacred Lotus, Bean of India, Chinese Water Lily and by many other local tribal names, this plant has a long history of honoured use, dating back to Egyptian times and potentially beyond. The flowers have been used to treat diarrhea, cholera, fever and hyperdipsia (intense thirst). It contains Neferine, an alkaloid unique to Blue Lotus, that is sedative, anti-depressant, anti-aging, anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-thrombotic (prevents blood clots), anti-inflammatory, anti-arrhythmic (regulates heart rhythms), anti-diabetic, somewhat anti-obesogenic and even anti-HIV. The herb can regulate the 5-HT serotonin receptors, preserve the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the face of toxins, and attenuate learning deficits. It has been shown to prevent atherosclerosis (fat build up in the arteries),  be hepaprotective (preventing liver fibrosis) and also improve eye health. Apomorphine is another alkaloid isolated from Nucifera species, apomorphine is used in allopathic medicine to treat erectile dysfunction.
