Angelica
Angelica archangelica

1:4 Ethanol/Brandy/Distilled H2O based Spagyric tincture of A. angelica roots – with salt principle added.
Planetary Ruler: Sun

Physical Properties*:
Throughout the world, the roots of this plant are used for the following actions: Carminative (eases gas, indigestion and bloating); diaphoretic (induces sweating and enables heat to ascend, warming the lungs, head and sinuses -useful during fevers and colds); diuretic (promotes healthy urination); antiseptic; antidepressant; digestive (stimulates gastric and pancreatic secretions); analgesic (reduces pain); expectorant (aids in the expulsion of mucous). Angelica may make a valuable ally when one is experiencing coughs, colds, fevers, pleurisy, asthma and bronchitis, as it relaxes the wind pipe, but also promotes expectoration of mucous, enabling digestive heat to rise up and ‘cook’ the illness out of one’s system. It is also useful in cases of colic, rheumatism, anorexia nervosa, toothache, headache, delayed or absent periods, and disease of the urinary organs (except where the patient is diabetic as it may increase sugars in the urine). Scientific studies have shown the roots to have the following properties: Antiproliferative (reduced the spread of breast and pancreatic cancers); antitumour activity (marked reduction in tumour growth); cytotoxic (increased the die-off of cancer cells); hepatoprotective (protects liver from oxidative stress); anticonvulsant (reduces the intensity and frequency of seizure); nootropic (inhibits acetylcholinesterase occurrence to indirectly enable focus); anti-ulcerogenic (reduces ulcers by reducing gastric acid output, increasing mucin creation, increasing prostaglandin E2 released, and decreasing leukotrienes); anti-mutagenic (reduced cell mutation in bone marrow cells); prophylactic against lead (prevented eyesight deterioration associated with lead administration in animal studies); nephroprotective (protects and promotes healthy kidney function). A. archangelica has also been used to purify, cleanse and strengthen the blood and heart.

Emotional/Spiritual Properties*:
The name Archangelica comes from the Greek word 'arkhangelos' (=arch-angel), due to the myth wherein angel Gabriel appeared to a monk and told of its ability to defend against the bubonic plague. Angelica species across the world are revered for their potency, with many European folk and pagan cultures holding festivals specifically for this wonder plant! Angelica has been used by some of these cultures as a divinatory herb, in the herbal tarot it takes the very honourable place of ‘The Sun’ in the major arcana. Truly, it is a luminous plant… when one considers the phrase ‘follow your heart’ that is often prescribed when one is in a state of melancholic drifting - along with Angelica’s heart, blood and lung, invigorating and warming energies, then it becomes apparent just how beneficial Angelica can be for those who are feeling downcast, disillusioned and depressed or who those may be retracting from the world because they ‘don’t know who they are.’ Angelica IS the Sun! It gets inside your chest and pumps it open, with increasing strength and fullness. Angelica, with her gracious umbrella like bouquets of delicate white flowers, and voluptuous greenery… she glides over to you with a warm yet stern gaze, places a few of her long fingers under your fallen chin, tilts it up and looks you in the eye. YOU CAN do this, more so, you realise you want to do this… this life thing! Inspiration begins to shimmer luminously inside your being, and you meet her gaze with fresh flickering flames in your eyes, she exhales a hearty ‘Gooood’, and you link arm in arm, to stride joyously out in to the fields of existence.
