Albizzia julibrissin

Physical properties*:
Albizzia is a light, fluffy flower with bright pink to lemony yellow hues, it is one of Chinese Medicine’s top shen tonics, meaning that it is calming to the spirit.
It treats insomnia, restlessness, palpitations, irritability, poor memory and breathlessness. It is particularly useful at improving those conditions where they have come about after a marked trauma, or some kind of shock – in these instances albizzia can be used to ‘calm and anchor the spirit’. It upregulates BDNF (brain derived neutropic factor), as well as the nuerotrasmittors 5-HT, noradrenaline, dopamine and monoamines, all these processes contribute to its depression alleviating abilities.
This flower downregulates the HPA axis which is commonly overactivated in stressed and depressed people. Albizzia is also used to disperse stuck liver energy which may be causing outbursts of anger, irritability, chest tension, allergies (particularly hayfever), or skin erruptions likes boils, acne, pimples, and/or psoriasis.

Emotional/spiritual effects:
In many ways Albizzia is solely taken for its spiritual and emotional properties, reducing the intensity of many forms of mental anguish. It helps people move through processes of grief. Funnily enough its’ TCM name translates to the ‘happy get together flower’ (He Huan Ha), whilst this might sound like a suggestion of aphrodisiac properties, what this name really denotes is the ability of this flower to unify our spirits with the collective spirit. Some people have experienced trauma, shock, or grief to the point where they are ready to ‘turn their backs on god’, or they may feel that ‘god’ has turned their back on them, in this instance Albizzia helps the individual process their intense emotions to the point where they can once again accept and feel that there is a greater benevolence present in life. This is the happy get together, getting back together with the spirit woven through all things. Another occurrence for people who have experienced trauma, severe grief of shock is that they feel their spirit is no longer in their body, Albizzia, as mentioned before, will help to ground and anchor the spirit back in the body – this is another happy get together, the spirit getting back together with the body.
